Solid Wood and Veneer: What Lasts in a Lahore Home

How to tell solid timber from veneer, why monsoon humidity matters, and which pieces are worth paying more for.

Solid wood and veneer are both honest materials when they are labelled honestly. Solid wood is timber through the thickness of the part. Veneer is a thin slice of real wood glued to a stable core. A good wardrobe is often veneer on the doors, because a wide solid panel will move in Lahore’s monsoon. A good bed rail or table leg is often solid, because that part is taking weight and knocks.

The failure you want to avoid is a printed paper that only looks like wood, or a veneer so thin that the first scratch shows the core. At the showroom, look at the edge, not the face. An edge that is the same timber, or a properly matched lipping, is a better sign than a glossy top. Open the drawer. The inside of a serious piece is plain and tight, not rough particle that sheds on your clothes.

Humidity is the real test in this city. Furniture that was perfect in a dry workshop can cup, stick, or open a joint after the first monsoon in a closed house. That is why we would rather you approve a finish sample than a photograph. Oil finishes on a platform bed such as Mehr can be refreshed. A thick polyurethane looks new for longer and is harder to repair invisibly when it chips.

Spend solid wood where hands and weight land: dining legs, a desk top you write on, a bed platform. The Forme oak desk and the Sable chair legs are that kind of piece. Spend veneer where you need a wide, flat, stable door — the Haven wardrobe is built that way on purpose. A two-door wardrobe in fully solid wide panels is not automatically better; it is often less stable.

Care is ordinary. Keep pieces out of direct afternoon sun, lift rather than drag a sofa, and use coasters on a stone-look dining top. Velvet such as the Como sofa needs a soft brush and a conversation about spills before they dry. Leather, like the Saddle sofa, should be wiped and fed, and it will still crease. If a salesperson promises a cloth or a hide that will never mark, they are selling a different product from the one in the room.

If you are comparing two quotes from Barkat Market, ask each shop to write down the material of the top, the legs, the door, and the drawer box. The cheaper quote is often a different construction, not the same piece at a discount. Bring that list to AF Furniture and we will tell you, piece by piece, what we are actually making.

Common questions

Is veneer worse than solid wood?

No. Veneer is the right choice for wide doors that must stay flat in humid weather. Solid wood is the right choice for legs, rails, and tops that take weight. The problem is a printed finish sold as either.

How should I check quality in the showroom?

Look at the edges, open every drawer, and ask what the door, the leg, and the drawer box are made of. Sit on the sofa. A photograph cannot show joint tightness or cushion fill.
